GENERAL INFORMATION

for prospective students

 

Admission 

The Polytechnic is open to all applicants irrespective of state of origin, race, sex, ethnic origin, family background, religion or political persuasion.

English is the medium of instruction.

 

Conditions for Admission: 

  • Normally, an applicant for admission must have reached the minimum age of seventeen (17) years as at the first day of October in the year he is seeking admission. There is no upper age limit.

  • The minimum qualification required for any programme is the West African School Certificate (WASC) or its equivalent, with four credits including credits in the appropriate subjects. Satisfying the minimum entry requirement alone does not, guarantee admission, since no person will be admitted unless he has:-

         (i)  Passed the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Entrance Examination;

         (ii)  been otherwise approved for admission by JAMB.

 

Candidates awaiting the WASC or equivalent results may also for admission. Such candidates must however show evidence of having obtained the necessary minimum entry qualification before being finally admitted into the Institution.

 

Method of Application:

Until recently, candidates wishing to study in the Polytechnic applied directly to the institution and sat for an entrance examination before they were considered for admission. Beginning from the 1990/01 session, the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has taken over the conduct of entrance examination into the Polytechnic as indeed for all Polytechnic in the country. 

Prospective candidates are advised to watch out for advertisement calling for applications for admissions into Polytechnics. Such advertisements are usually published in national newspapers.

 

Registration Procedures:

Candidate must register for their respective programme in person within three weeks of the  beginning of the academic year: only in exceptional circumstances will any candidate be allowed to register after the deadline. Candidates will be registered only after they have presented the following:

  • original letter of admission issued by JAMB.

  • original educational certificates and documents and 

  • three passport-size photographs.

Candidates who fail to comply with these registration regulations will forfeit their admission.

 

Order of Registration:

This is announced at the beginning of each session.

 

Change of Programme:

It is assumed that candidates would have chosen their programme carefully and thoughtfully at the time of applying for admission to the Polytechnic. This notwithstanding, in special circumstances, a student may be permitted to change his programe of study. Any application for such a change must be in writing to the Registrar, attaching evidence that the applicant has secured the consent of the Department to which the application is being made and the Department to which he was originally admitted.
