Programme goals & objectives, (ND)

The programme for the award of National Diploma in Secretarial Studies in the polytechnic is designed.

  1. To equip the student with specific skills that will enable them to successfully hold position as secretaries in both private and public sector of the Nigeria economy
  2. To expose student to industrial experience thereby affording them an opportunity to praticalize their training.
  3. To develop in them an occupational intelligence that will make them versatile and adaptable to the changing situation in the business word.
  4. To develop their potential for further academic and professional pursuits

Specifically,

  1. At the end of National Diploma Course, the diplomates should be able to write in shorthand two passages on varied matter of 1.4 syllabic intensity dictated at a speed averaging 100 words power minutes for 3 mins and transcribe on the typewriter with 95% accuracy.
  2. Typewrite for ten minutes at 50 words per minute a passage (not below 1.4 stroke intensity) with 95% accuracy.
  3. Typewrite a group of given job which will include manuscripts letter, tabulation and other display work within a given period of not more than 2.5 hrs in mail able form
  4. Make administrative decision, deal with correspondence, relate to people politely,  supervise subordinate staff and perform other routine functions with a minimum of supervision.
  5. Operate a good filing system and keep simple financial records.
  6. Operate and take good care of office machines and equipment.

Programme goals & objectives, (HND)

    At the end of the HND course the diplomates will be able to:
  1. Write in short 4 passages on varied matter of 1.5 syllabic intensity dictated at a speed averaging 120 words per minute for 3 minutes each and transcribe on the typewriter with 96% accuracy.
  2. Type write for ten minute at 60 words per minute a passage (not below 1.5 stroke intensity) with 96% accuracy
  3. Typewrite a group of given jobs which include manuscripts. letters, Tabulation and other display work within a given period of not more than 3 hours in mailable form
  4. Perform varied administrative duties of
    1. Record keeping
    2. Supervision of staff and
    3. Office management.

National Diploma (ND) Programme in Secretarial Studies

Entry Requirements

The general entry requirement for the National Diploma programme in Secretarial Studies  is West African School Certificate (WASC), General Certificate of Education (GCE O/L), Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Board for Technical Education Certificate (NABTEB) or their equivalents with FOUR credits AT a sitting including English Language , Literature in English and Oral English are not accepted in place of English Language.  Grade II Teachers certificate with four (4) credits including English Language can also be considered for admission.

Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme in Secretarial Studies

Entry Requirements

In addition to all the requirements for admission into the ND programme, candidate for admission into the HND programme must possess a minimum of Lower Credit pass in the National Diploma Examination in Secretarial Administration  from Auchi Polytechnic or any other recognized institution whose programmes are accredited by NBTE and satisfactory completion of one year industrial work experience.
