Goals & objectives

The Department is a General Studies Department. It is made up of lecturers from the Humanities and Social  Science disciplines such as History/Political Science: Economics, Law English, Sociology, Psychology, etc. The objectives of the Department include the provision of a broad-based education designed to sharpen students' communication skills, their realization of the need for the cross-fertilization of ideas and the inter-relatedness of the various disciplines. 

The department also aims at inculcating the idea of national loyalty and cultural antecedents. The department  teaches courses in Citizenship Education aimed at properly equipping students on the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the structure and functions of government, the Rights privileges and obligations of citizens and the democratic and social values of Nigeria. The department services the entire Polytechnic at the ND and HND levels in an attempt to fulfill the objectives highlighted above.

Specifically, on successfully completing the required General studies course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the society better and appreciate equally better the place of the individual in it
2. Develop critictical minds
3. Acquire a breath of knowledge and sensitivity to weigh ethical and moral issues and
4. Form mature values and life goals.

Entry Requirements

The department is a service one and not a diploma - awaiting one. For its Extra-Mural programme, however, the entry requirement are SSC - attempted. JSC - attempted, JME and GCE - attempted. Students who are preparing for the above examinations who have not attempted them before are equally eligible to apply.
