with Structural Engineering option. Transportation Engineering option and Water
    Resources Engineering option.

Programme Objective in (ND)

The course is designed to produce technicians in various Civil Engineering and building areas for both the private and public sectors of the economy. Specifically,

  1. Students who have successfully gone through this course should be able to carry out survey for the purpose of design and construction as well as for the preparation of bill of quantities for Civil Engineering and Building projects at the various stages during implementation.
  2. Carry out supervision of Civil Engineering works and maintain records of work-in-progress for the structural organisations.
  3. Take part in the preparation of contract drawings and documents at the design stages as well as modify such drawings during construction.
  4. Apply appropriate procedure and data in the measurement of Building and Civil Engineering works.
  5. Interpret Civil Engineering and Architectural drawing for construction works.

Programme Objectives(HND)

The programme is designed to produce Technologist/Engineers in Civil Engineering that are:

  1. Employable and meet the demands of the industry from a mastery in such fields as applied design, materials and construction and the operation, supervision and management of all phases of Civil Engineering Technology.
  2. Having a good grasp of the basic concepts and preparation to cope with the changing technology of the industry. Such a person should be able to pursue higher studies without any difficulty.
  3. Self employed.

Specific Objectives: Structural Engineering Option:-

  1. Design simple structural elements and prepare detailed drawings of such elements with minimum supervision
  2. Carry out supervision and prepare progress reports on Civil works
  3. Maintain comprehensive records of work-in-progress for the use of contractors, the clients or the structural organisations.
  4. Carry out accurate interpretation of technical data related to engineering structures during contract negotiations
  5. Carry out appropriate testing of structural materials
  6. Prepare simple quantities, estimates and specifications of structural engineering works.

Transportation Engineering option:

  1. Test materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete and asphalt for the design and construction of roads, air fields, rail roads, docks and harbors
  2. Carry out surveys for the design and construction of roads, air fields, rail roads, docks and harbors
  3. Design simple road schemes and prepare working drawing for their construction
  4. Supervise construction work in highways, aerodromes, harbours and docks, railways, water schemes and buildings
  5. Conduct traffic surveys and apply simple traffic management techniques in accordance with basic transportation planning principles
  6. Prepare simple quantities, estimates and specifications of transportation schemes.

Water Resources Engineering option:

  1. Collect and test water samples and analyse such test results for the design of water treatment facilities
  2. Design simple water and waste water schemes and distribution network
  3. Supervise the construction of water and waste water, solid waste and irrigation schemes
  4. Prepare simple quantities, estimates and specifications of water resource schemes
  5. Operate and maintain water works, waste water and solid waste installations and irrigation projects
  6. Conduct public health and pollution control campaigns.

The curriculum for the first year of the Higher National Diploma course will be the same for all students enrolled in the course. At the second year HND,  the student are free to choose any one of the following options:

  1. Structural Engineering
  2. Transportation Engineering
  3. Water Resources Engineering.

In addition the students are required to carry out a project on a practical problem in the field as a partial fulfillment requirements for the award of Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering.
